Los Angeles, Chile: Comin’ into Los Angeleez

September 27, 2019 Jim Leave a Comment

There was absolutely no reason for us to stay in Los Angeles, Chile except that it is exactly halfway between Santiago and our destination, Puerto Varas. Well, that and the fact that I thought it would be cool to stay in a place named Los Angeles that wasn’t the Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles had a population 3,990,456 in the last census. Los Angeles, Chile had a mere 128,333 people in the last Chilean census.

But those 128,333 people make the most of it. That’s the Sheraton Hotel towering above the city in the middle of the photo (above). A bustling casino fills the first two floors of the skyscraper. A luxury shopping center sits next door. And if you look closely you can see the Golden Arches near the hotel.

What hath America wrought?

Back in the days when I was the world’s second worst DJ, I had a six hour Sunday night shift that was a killer. I always played this Arlo Guthrie song somewhere in the last half hour.

At this point in my life, the lyrics definitely need to be rewritten:

“Comin’ into Los Angeleeze, hobblin’ on a couple bad knees…”
