Kapunda, South Australia: Love this street name

February 6, 2020 Jim 2 Comments

Our friend Diane Fleming is famous for using the phrase “Winner, winner, chicken dinner.” A few years ago we were barreling down the highway just west of Boise, Idaho and I screeched to a halt just to take a photo of Chicken Dinner Road. I always thought that was the best street name I would ever see.

Until today.

A couple miles south of lovely Kapunda, South Australia we sped past this street sign. Once again I screeched to a halt just to take a photo.

I always loved Rocky & Bullwinkle. It was the first animated show written for adults. I knew there were jokes I didn’t get which made me love it even more. I was once lucky enough to meet Jay Ward, the creator of the show, and I stuttered and stammered as if I was meeting God. Or Sandy Koufax.

But that’s redundant, isn’t it.

UPDATE: One of our Aussie friends tells us that Vivian Bullwinkel was a true Aussie hero. A nurse, she survived a series of harrowing experiences in World War II. The ship she was aboard was sunk. She was later shot, tortured, and raped. I’d say she deserves a lot more than having her named attached to an isolated country road.

I would never live in THAT street. Just like I’d never marry a man called Johnny Mc Conky.

Stay on the lookout for “Rocky Lane”.
