Angaston, South Australia: Seven Aussie TV commercials

March 1, 2020 Jim 1 Comment

KFC – Ever been caught doing something you shouldn’t have been doing in public? Of course, the Aussie social justice warriors condemn this commercial, which is usually a pretty good sign that it will be funny.

McDonald’s – No intro needed here because McDonald’s is McDonald’s everywhere in the world. Hard to believe a hamburger commercial could make you tear up, but this one can. A great Aussie story with a great Aussie soundtrack.

Spec Savers – American readers can think of Spec Savers as the Australian version of Lens Crafters.

Iron Jack – This may not be a great commercial, but it’s a good one. It reminds me how much I miss our little dog Tinker.

Uber Eats – To understand this commercial, you need to know that Kath & Kim was a hugely popular Aussie TV sitcom. The woman you see at the beginning of the commercial was a character from that show. So when she speaks to Kim, you think she’s talking to the Kim character from the show. But don’t jump to any conclusions. The commercial is a really funny exploration of the differences between the Aussie language and the American language.

Hyundai. Some things are universal. Like brothers and sisters and back seats. “Don’t make me pull this car over.”

Hyundai again. Speaking of universal, here’s another Hyundai commercial. This one would never get on the air in the United States.

Those are all so much better than Chevy’s “real people” ads here in the U.S.
