In reply to Bob. Well, this is embarrassing. I had to use Google Translate to discover that “Dank je” means “Thank you” in Dutch. You know, Dutch, the language of my ancestors. But in my defense, I also know three or four words in that language. “Dank je” just isn’t on that list.

I enjoyed your postive tips. I would only like add, if no local language is known or learned in advance…. Just be very POLITE, respectful and speak softly (non aggressive). I found those qualities are very appreciated in Japan and are often unfortunately NOT usually associated with the average American.
