I have a friend who’s in charge of all the real estate owned and leased by a major private university. I think he told me he’s in charge of 87 different properties (Feel free to correct me if the number’s not correct, Kev). No matter what the number is, his job has a lot of moving parts and has always sounded incredibly complex to me.
I don’t know who’s in charge of real estate for Seppeltsfield Wines, but I think his job may be even more complex than Kevin’s just because the company is so diversified.
Seppeltsfield was founded here in the Barossa back in 1851 and now owns and operates more than 8000 acres of vineyards all across the valley. Plus more just over the hill in the Clare Valley. And still more just over the other hill in McLaren Vale.
In addition to all the vineyards and buildings and processes involved in making wine, the company makes its own barrels. They have a bed and breakfast. A cafe. Indoor and outdoor meeting facilities. Retail stores. In the summer months they even have an outdoor movie theater. And they just received approval to build a fancy schmancy $50 million hotel.
To top it all off, there’s an entire village named Seppeltsfield. It’s home to about 300 happy, friendly Barrosians.
And if a tie breaker is needed, Seppeltsfield has its own football team, but Kevin’s university doesn’t.
Kevin says
Priceless – Jim! I only have a 43-room hotel to worry about that cost about $2.2M in the olden days! I want nothing to do with any more hotel space whatsoever!
