Buenos Aires, Argentina: The man with the flan

September 20, 2019 Jim 3 Comments

Welcome to the Tierra Negra Cooking Class, held nightly in Buenos Aires’ Palermo Hollywood neighborhood. Jamie loves cooking classes and she talked me into tagging along this time.

Here we are with our instructors Veronica and Manuel.

Here’s the entire class (clockwise): Manuel, Jamie, Jim, Theresa, the other Theresa, Morgan and Connie. Everyone but us was in town for the Buenos Aires Marathon which is being run on September 22. (Connie is pretty damn good and has run marathons all around the world. The others do it for fun. Fun??????)

After making the dough for empanadas, we were told to use rolling pins to roll six little balls of dough into circles. The photo below demonstrates why I don’t commonly attend cooking classes. Six people, six balls of dough each, and I was the only one who came up with something like this. The chef actually walked over, picked it up and tossed it aside. I hope Jamie wasn’t too embarrassed.

Despite my inadequacies, the results were spectacular.

The ones I made didn’t look so good, but they still tasted like I was a professional.

We ended the night with flan and dulce de leche, the sweetest, most delicious thing you’ve ever tasted.

Full disclosure: We really didn’t have much to do with the flan except for eating it. Works for me.

Looks like you’re donning the chef’s hats in Kal. Yum!

Your dough looks remotely like a torso with scoliosis….. ! But the end product looks delicious! How fun for y’all! We’re going to hold you to remaking them in your new kitchen!
