Angaston, South Australia: A guy’s gotta have dreams

December 11, 2017 Jim Leave a Comment

Every time we drive along the gently winding road between Angaston and Tanunda we pass what may be the most beautiful spot I’ve ever seen.

This photo does not do it justice. You can’t see the gorgeous old stone building sitting down at the foot of the vineyard. You can’t see the rest of the Barossa Valley spreading across the horizon. You can’t see the sheep grazing on the yellow, grassy hillside. You can’t see the mobs of kangaroos that gather on the land every dawn and dusk. You can’t see that this stunning landscape is just a ten minute stroll from Angaston’s main street.

A small house sits just off the right side of this photo. I have a fantasy that I will someday knock on the owner’s door, and when he answers, I will introduce myself and tell him to name his price.

Unfortunately, Australia’s immigration policies stand between me and my ability to make my fantasy a reality. Alas, Americans cannot purchase property in Australia unless they have a permanent resident visa, but they won’t grant permanent resident visas to anyone over fifty.

Oh, well.

My other fantasy is that they someday change those policies.
