If you heard about the bush fires in Australia (and I can’t imagine that you didn’t), Kangaroo Island was one of the places that suffered the most damage. Fifty percent of the island went up in smoke. Thousands of kangaroos and koalas were killed. Tourism has been devastated.
It’s a big island. 1700 square miles (or for our Aussie friends, 4405 square kilometers). By way or comparison, Catalina Island, off the shore of California, is only 76 square miles. Maui is just 727 square miles.
But the Aussies are a tough breed and the tourists have already begun trickling back.
That’s Kangaroo Island out there in the distance. The easiest way to get to get there is to drive down to Cape Jervis and take the ferry thirteen miles across the channel to Penneshaw. If you look off into the distance you’ll see the ferry silhouetted against the island. This is the dock from which it departs and to which it returns.
The old fisherman stays.
